Miss Canada Pageant
The Miss Canada Pageant, interestingly enough, happens to not originally be the pageant that determines which of the beautiful young ladies partaking in the beauty pageant would be eligible for the international pageants of Miss Universe, Miss World, and Miss Earth. Instead, the Miss Canada Pageant is an abolished beauty pageant that began in 1946 and ended in 1992. The goal of the Miss Canada Pageant was not exactly to prepare and pick out young ladies who can participate in the international pageants, rather, they served as a scholarship competition for young ladies who desire to go to school but don’t have the means to do so – in other words, the Miss Canada Pageant was something not unlike a sports scholarship, except it’s a lot more feminine.
The Miss Canada Pageant went on for a few years before they decided to televise it. In 1963, some seventeen years since the Miss Canada Pageant was first founded in Hamilton, the CBC network featured a telecast of the competition. Four years later, the Miss Canada Pageant was moved to CTV, and from that point until two years before the Miss Canada Pageant was abolished, the event was hosted by famous Canadian-American show host Jim Perry. The event was televised until it was inevitably cancelled due to the poor ratings it showed in the 1980’s, following the height of its popularity in the 1970’s. The official reason for the cancellation, however, was the rising costs of production (which were likely not made up for by the poor ratings).
It must be pointed out, however, that the Miss Canada Pageant was associated with the Miss Universe Pageant for a while; in 1978, it obtained the franchise for Miss Universe because one of its contestants competed in the Miss Universe Pageant. Since then, the winners of the Miss Canada Pageant have been slated to compete in that particular international beauty pageant. After the Miss Canada Pageant was abolished, the Miss Universe Canada Pageant became the pageant that determines which girl will compete in the Miss Universe Pageant.
